Professor Klaus J. Hopt is Emeritus Professor of Law at the Hamburg Max Planck Institute (since 1995). Since 1974 he was full professor at the universities in Tuebingen, Florence, Berne and Munich and held many visiting professorships in Europe, Japan and the USA (Columbia, Harvard, NYU et al.). His professional career includes: judge at the State Court of Appeals of Stuttgart (1981-85), member of the High Level Group of Company Law Experts, European Commission, Brussels (2001-02); vice president of the German Research Foundation (2002-08), chairman of the Scientific Council of the Max Planck Society (2003-06), member of the supervisory board of the Deutsche Börse AG, expert for the German Parliament, the German Federal Constitutional Court, the German Central Bank, the European Commission and the World Bank. He is author, editor and co-editor of many publications in the field of corporate and commercial law, particularly on corporate governance and takeover law (see http://www.mpipriv.de). He holds honorary doctor degrees from Paris Descartes, Athens and other universities and is a member of the German National Academy Leopoldina.
